No: 309, 1 December 2020, Press Release Regarding the 47. Session of the OIC Council of Foreign Ministers

The Resolutions adopted at the 47. Session of the OIC Council of Foreign Ministers (CFM), held in Niamey on 27-28 November 2020 with the participation of H.E. Mr. Mevlüt Çavuşoğlu, Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Turkey, are imperative with respect to the confirmation of the unity among the OIC Member States vis-à-vis the issues of common concern for the Islamic World.

We welcome the unanimious election of H.E. Mr. Hissein Brahim Taha, former Foreign Minister of the Republic of Chad, as the consensus candidate of the African Group for the post of the next OIC Secretary General during the CFM and congratulate him again on this occasion.

From the outset, Turkey has attached importance and given priority to the election of the next Secretary General from within the African Group as a consensus candidate in accordance with the OIC Charter and established procedures with a view to preserving and strengthening the international character of the Organization. This approach has been emphasized on several occasions by H.E. Mr. Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, President of the Republic of Turkey and H.E. Foreign Minister Mevlüt Çavuşoğlu.

We thank H.E. Mr. Yousef al-Othaimeen, the incumbent Secretary General for his services. We wish every success to H.E. Mr. Hissein Brahim Taha, the Secretary General-elect, who will assume his duty as of November 2021. We reaffirm our support to H.E. Mr. Taha during his tenure in his endeavors for the proper fullfilment of the Organization’s mission primarily for furthering the reform work which started upon Turkey’s initiative towards effective functioning and institutionalization of the OIC.
