Meeting with Ambassador of Germany on the Situation in Ukraine

PORT OF SPAIN: 24TH FEBRUARY, 2022

The Minister of Foreign and CARICOM Affairs, Senator the Honourable Dr. Amery Browne, today 24th February 2022, met with Her Excellency Ute König, Ambassador of the Federal Republic of Germany to discuss the ongoing situation in Ukraine.

Minister Browne and Ambassador König discussed their mutual concerns regarding the military invasion of Ukraine by the Russian Federation and expressed deep concern about this threat to global peace and security.

Adherence to the principles of the United Nations Charter concerning military action in sovereign states was alluded to by Minister Browne in his declaration of the sanctity accorded by Trinidad and Tobago to international law.

Ambassador König expressed her appreciation to Trinidad and Tobago for its statement strongly condemning military action by the Russian Federation in Ukraine. Her Excellency went on to state her gratitude to this country for instructing its overseas Missions to use all available diplomatic channels and fora to reaffirm its commitment to the territorial integrity of sovereign states, and to call for the immediate cessation of hostilities and a return to dialogue and diplomacy to resolve the crisis. 

Minister Browne and Ambassador König were unanimous on the need for the curtailment of military activities which threaten the security of civilians in Ukraine and the use of diplomatic channels to arrive at a solution to the currently critical situation.
