The government of the Republic of China (Taiwan) and the government of Saint Lucia, wishing to strengthen the friendship based on equality and reciprocity that exists between the two countries, have decided to resume full diplomatic relations as of today.
On behalf of the two governments, H.E. Minister of Foreign Affairs James C. F. Huang and H.E. Minister of External Affairs Rufus Bousquet signed the Joint Communiqué on the Reestablishment of Diplomatic Relations between the Republic of China (Taiwan) and Saint Lucia in Castries, the Capital of Saint Lucia, at 11:30 on April 30, 2007, Saint Lucia time (23:30 Taipei time on the same day), to officially restore diplomatic relations. Taiwan will establish its embassy there on the same day in accordance with the Joint Communiqué.
The restoring of diplomatic ties between Saint Lucia and Taiwan has received full support of Prime Minister Sir John George Melvin Compton and all members of Saint Lucia’s cabinet. Prime Minister Sir John Compton is a senior statesman who established the United Workers Party and led the country to formal independence. This will be his eighth term as Prime Minister. Saint Lucia, under the premiership of H.E. Sir John Compton, established diplomatic ties with Taiwan in 1984. Diplomatic ties between Saint Lucia and Taiwan were severed when the former government of Saint Lucia under the Labor Party switched recognition to China in 1997. In view that his previous administration enjoyed friendly and cooperative relations with Taiwan, Prime Minister John Compton believes that the restoring of official diplomatic ties between Saint Lucia and Taiwan will be in Saint Lucia’s best national interests. After reassuming office in December 2006, Prime Minister Sir John Compton convened a cabinet conference to pass a proposal to reestablish diplomatic relations with Taiwan, and to launch various cooperative projects between the two countries.
