The President of the Republic of The Gambia, Sheikh Professor Alhaji Dr. Yahya A. J. J. Jammeh, stated in a letter to the Embassy of the Republic of China in The Gambia on November 14, 2013, that The Gambia has decided to terminate diplomatic relations with the Republic of China, effective immediately. The Republic of China expresses surprise and regret over The Gambia’s decision.
In his letter to the ROC government, President Jammeh pointed out that The Gambia and the Republic of China have for many years enjoyed close and mutually beneficial cooperation in various fields, producing remarkable results. President Jammeh extended his gratitude for the Republic of China’s friendship and cooperation, as well as his appreciation for the significant achievements the two countries have attained since diplomatic relations were established 18 years ago.
The ROC government reiterates that, since diplomatic ties with The Gambia were restored, the Republic of China has put forward and undertaken a variety of programs in The Gambia that have enhanced the livelihood of the Gambian people and have been well received by all sectors of society. At the same time, The Gambia has long been a staunch supporter of the Republic of China in the international arena. The Republic of China and The Gambia have also held frequent, high-level exchanges. This year, for example, the Vice President of The Gambia, Aja Dr. Isatou Njie-Saidy, led a delegation to attend celebrations marking the ROC National Day. Indeed, the diplomatic relations between the Republic of China and The Gambia have always been cordial.
The ROC government attaches great importance to the longstanding and friendly relations between the two countries, and has already conveyed its solemn position on President Jammeh’s decision through appropriate channels. (E)
