Taiwan and the United States held a videoconference on October 22 to discuss strategies and approaches for enhancing Taiwan’s international participation. Covering international organizations that deal with topics of common values and interests, such as public health, civil aviation safety, climate change adaptation, and the fight against cross-border crime, the meeting highlights how the strong and steadfast Taiwan-US partnership is promoting Taiwan’s meaningful participation in such organizations. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA) thanks the United States for its staunch support.
During the meeting, the United States recognized Taiwan as a vital and indispensable partner for multilateral cooperation in postpandemic recovery. It also reaffirmed its continued commitment to helping increase Taiwan’s international participation and presence, as well as the close cooperation between the two countries. In remarks made on MOFA’s behalf, Secretary General Lily L. W. Hsu expressed sincere gratitude for the consistent and resolute US support for and pledges to Taiwan. She also stressed that Taiwan will continue to engage internationally in a professional, pragmatic, and constructive manner and will work closely with the United States and other like-minded countries to strengthen multilateral governance and the rules-based international order, adding that this will allow Taiwan to continue to proactively contribute to the world.
In addition to Secretary General Hsu, participants from Taiwan included Taiwan’s Deputy Representative to the United States Wang Liang-yu and their teams in Taipei and Washington, DC. US participants included Acting Principal Deputy Assistant Secretary of State for International Organization Affairs Hugo Yon, Deputy Assistant Secretary of State for East Asian and Pacific Affairs Rick Waters, Deputy Assistant Secretaries of State for International Organization Affairs Nerissa J. Cook and Jane Rhee, and Deputy Director of the Taipei Office of the American Institute in Taiwan Jeremy Cornforth. (E)
