In regards to the coup d’etat that occurred in the Democratic Republic of Sao Tome and Principe on July 16, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of China makes the following statement: The Government of the Republic of China expresses its deep regret and concern over the coup d’etat that occurred in the Democratic Republic of Sao Tome and Principe. Based on the universal value of democracy, the Government of the Republic of China urges the international community to assist the Democratic Republic of Sao Tome and Principe to restore its democratically-elected government and constitutional system.
In view of the cordial relations between the Republic of China and the Democratic Republic of Sao Tome and Principe, as well as our wish to cooperate with Sao Tome and Principe in economic development and enhance the well-being of the people of that country, the Government of the Republic of China hopes that this crisis will be resolved expeditiously through peaceful dialogue so that the cooperative projects currently undertaken together by our two countries can continue to be implemented
