ADDRESS FOR WORLD ORAL HEALTHDAY

The Ministry of Health, Wellness and Elderly Affairs joins the global community in commemoratingWorld Oral Health Day on March 20, 2022 under the theme “Be Proud of your Mouth”.

TheDentalServices unit, today Friday March 18, 2022 started the observance of the day with the launchof theOralCare programme for the Elderly. The unit has also embarked on a series of activities gearedtowardsincreasing sensitization and raising awareness on good oral health. We want you to have ahealthymouth and be proud of it as we know that good oral hygiene can improve your overall healthoutcomes, quality of life and livelihoods. ‘Being proud of one’s mouth also means valuing the uniqueness of yourown natural dentition.

The Global Burden of Disease 2019 highlights dental caries in permanent teeth, as the ‘world’smostcommon condition.’ The prevalence of dental caries is highly impacted by the increased consumptionofsugars. Sugar is the main cause of the breakdown of tooth enamel thus making it the main riskfactoroftooth decay. Most oral health diseases are easily preventable and treated inexpensivelywithearlydetection. We encourage everyone to use a fluoride based toothpaste with a soft bristle brush, brushatleast two minutes twice a day, brush all tooth surfaces, replace your toothbrush every twotothreemonths, floss daily, visit a dentist at least twice a year, reduce snacking between meals andeat abalanced diet.

If you have tested positive for the COVID-19 virus, best practice to avoid re-infection is to discardyourtoothbrush after you recover because the mouth is one of the main entry points for the virus. Oraldiseases are highly preventable through early interventions. See your dentist today, practicegoodhygiene habits so that you can “Be Proud of your Mouth.”
