Tonga: Hunga Tonga-Hunga Ha’apai volcano

The eruption of the Hunga Tonga-Hunga Ha’apai volcano and resulting tsunami badly affected parts of Tongatapu and other nearby islands on Saturday 15 January. Further eruptions and volcanic ash falls could occur.

Communications links with Tonga have been severely disrupted so it is not unexpected that New Zealanders may have difficulties contacting their whānau in Tonga at this time. We recommend that you continue to try and make contact with loved ones.

New Zealanders in Tonga should follow the advice of local authorities, including any tsunami evacuation orders. They should be prepared to leave the area if required. Take additional health precautions and follow the advice of the Tongan authorities’ around the use of water.

We also recommend that New Zealanders stay informed of developments by monitoring local media, where possible. Where possible, please also keep your family back in New Zealand informed of your wellbeing.
