Presentations of Dutch art in the UK picking up slowly

Since cultural venues have reopened in the UK, work from artists from the Netherlands is also making its way to the UK again. A lot is currently happening in the North of England and the South of Scotland. Most of the work is also accessible online, in one way or another. So even if you can’t travel to Glasgow International, Irvine Beach, the Liverpool Biennial, the Bradford Literature Festival or Abandon Normal Devices in Manchester, you can still take in some Dutch culture.

Yael Davids in Liverpool

At Liverpool Central Library, visitors can see work by Yael Davids, born in Israel, based in Amsterdam. David’s project is inspired by drawings of birds she found in a rare nineteenth century book that’s in possession of the Liverpool Central Library. The spectacular book about birds made her think about what it means to migrate, and also what it means to study and to be studied. Unable to visit the library? No problem! You can experience the exhibition in Virtual Reality or get an impression on Vimeo.

Nora Turato and Dan Walwin in Glasgow

Work from two artists who are living in the Netherlands is currently on display at Glasgow International Festival of Contemporary Visual Art. Nora Turato’s work is part of a group exhibition at 5 Florence Street. Images of the work can be seen here and here. Dan Walwin has a solo exhibition at the David Dale Gallery. The gallery’s website gives an impression of the work that’s on display.

Connie Palmen at Bradford Literature Festival

Dutch author Connie Palmen speaks about her recently translated book ‘Your Story, My Story’ at the Bradford Literature Festival. Palmen’s novel is a fictionalised portrayal of Sylvia Plath’s love affair with fellow poet Ted Hughes. Palmen will be in conversation with Heather Clark who wrote a biography about Sylvia Plath, an iconic poet and author whose intriguing life has inspired many authors to write about her. Watch the conversation on demand as of 30 June 2021.

Angeliki Diakrousi and Mariëlle Verdijk at AND Manchester

Abandon Normal Devices in Manchester is hosting ‘Weedweavers‘, by Angeliki Diakrousi and Mariëlle Verdijk from the Netherlands. In the past week, Diakrousi and Verdijk spoke with people from Liverpool, via online gatherings, about the ancient use of algae in the area. They touched upon topics like non-traditional science practices, myths, recipes and feminism. This all culminates in an audiovisual broadcast, which will first come available online on Friday 9 July. The recording will remain available until Sunday 11 July. Free of charge.

Strijbos & Van Rijswijk on Irvine Beach, Scotland

A large scale art installation will emerge on Irvine Beach, on the west coast of Scotland, on 16 July. It’s the work of Dutch audio artists Strijbos & Van Rijswijk, commissioned by Glasgow-based cultural organisation Cryptic. Visitors will have to go on a relaxed beach walk to hear the entire musical performance. Signal-on-Sea can be visted at Irvine Beach from 16 to 25 July.

Supported by the Dutch Embassy

Bringing artists and their equipment over from the Netherlands to the UK can be rather costly. To encourage British organisations to work with artists from the Netherlands, despite these extra costs, the Dutch Embassy has funding available. Read more about our funding criteria and what process British cultural organisations need to follow if they want to apply for funding from the Embassy.
