U Chan Aye, Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs attended the Workshop on the 20th Anniversary of the Declaration on the Conduct of Parties in the South China Sea (DOC) (27-7-2022)

In the course of the Workshop, U Mang Hau Thang, Deputy Director General of the ASEAN Affairs Department, Ministry of Foreign Affairs discussed under the session III on Consultation of the COC and he shared the views how to proceed the process of COC negotiations that led to mutually beneficial outcome. As a co-chair of the Joint Working Group on DOC, he remained committed to increase the frequency of JWG-DOC meetings within this year towards early conclusion of an effective and substantive COC, which would contribute to the maintenance of peace and stability in the region.
At the Workshop, Permanent Secretary delivered the opening remarks. Mr. Wang Yi, State Councilor and Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Peoples’ Republic of China, Mr. Hor Namhong, Deputy Prime Minister of the Kingdom of Cambodia and Mr. Saifuddin Abdullah, Minister of Foreign Affairs of Malaysia also made their respective opening remarks.
At the Workshop, there were three panel discussions namely on “Recollections on the Historical Moment of the Signing of the DOC”, “Implementation of the DOC: Achievements and Prospects” and “Consultations of the COC: Progress and the Way Forward”. In panel discussions, the participants recalled the historic moment of the signing of the DOC by sharing the experiences and challenges encountered to achieve this milestone document. The participants reviewed the achievements on the implementation of the DOC and Consultations of the COC and exchanged views on the prospects and way forward towards the early conclusion of COC.
U Chan Aye, Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs attended the Workshop on the 20th Anniversary of the Declaration on the Conduct of Parties in the South China Sea via video conference which was held in Beijing on 25 July 2022 at 0730 hrs.
Permanent Secretary, in his opening remarks, expressed appreciation to co-organizers of the event. He recalled the significant achievements in the full and effective implementation of the Declaration on the Conduct of Parties (DOC) to promote peace, stability, mutual trust, and confidence in the region and the substantive negotiations towards the early conclusion of an effective and substantive Code of Conduct in the South China Sea (COC) over the past twenty years. He also encouraged participants to explore practical maritime cooperation initiatives and joint cooperative activities on issues of common interest that would contribute to the promotion of mutual trust and confidence in the South China Sea, in accordance with the Work Plan on the Implementation of the DOC and the Guidelines for the Implementation of the DOC. He highlighted the need to continue constructive engagement to keep the momentum of the progress of dialogue and consultation towards eventual adoption of the COC.
The Workshop was jointly organized by the Department of Boundary and Ocean Affairs, Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Peoples’ Republic of China, Wuhan University China Institute of Boundary and Ocean Studies (CIBOS) and National Institute for South China Sea Studies (NISCSS) and was attended by Senior Officials from ASEAN Member States and China, scholars and experts in International Studies. <!–
