How to Build Confidence in Asia: Priorities of Kazakhstan’s CICA Chairmanship Presented at UN

Nur-Sultan, April 2, 2021 – First Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of Kazakhstan Shakhrat Nuryshev took part in the International Conference “How to build Stronger Confidence in Asia and Make CICA More Responsive to the Challenges of the 21st Century”, which was organized at the UN by the Permanent Mission of Kazakhstan in cooperation with the Secretariat of the Conference on Interaction and Confidence Building Measures in Asia (CICA).

The event was attended by delegations from the countries of the UN Asia-Pacific Group as well as CICA Member and Observer States.

In his keynote remarks, Nuryshev spoke about the priorities of Kazakhstan’s chairmanship in the CICA and noted that “Kazakhstan attaches a special significance to the practical implementation of the Catalogue of Confidence-Building Measures and the development of multilateral cooperation for the joint search for effective solutions in such topical areas as epidemiological security, public health, ecology, digitalization, etc.”. It was emphasized that the CICA process actively involves representatives of the business communities, academic and expert circles, youth and non-governmental organizations of the CICA members and this contributes to the further strengthening of the political, economic and intercultural cooperation among Asian countries.

A video address by the Under Secretary General of the United Nations Office of Counter-Terrorism Vladimir Voronkov was presented during the Conference. Among other speakers were the Permanent Representative of Kazakhstan to the UN Magzhan Ilyasov and Executive Director of the CICA Secretariat Kairat Sarybay.

During the discussions, the participants of the event emphasized the relevance of the CICA and the importance of its activities in contemporary geopolitical juncture.

The CICA is an observer at the UN, and the UN is also an observer at the CICA.
