I am, for that reason pleased at the focused interest and support which the Embassy of Jamaica in Brussels has dedicated to the development of the marketplace for JMBC in European countries. In 2021, the Embassy organized a bilateral meeting between Jamaican plus Belgian/EU coffee stakeholders, including retailers and roasters, whom identified several trends in the EU coffee market that required the attention of the Jamaican coffee industry. This initiative culminated in a Carribbean Export Development Agency (CEDA)- sponsored study entitled, Expanding Jamaica Blue Mountain Coffee in the EUROPEAN UNION European, including several recommendations to support the objective of making JMBC a more competitive product in the EU marketplace.
Blue mountain coffee is regarded as a premium product within the European market, and there exists a strong demand for the item among European consumers. Both the Jamaican Coffee Exporters’ Association (JCEA) and the JACRA possess expressed an interest in expanding exports of JBMC towards the European Union market and there is sufficient scope to achieve this given its large consumer bottom (approximately 450 million consumers). According to existing data, Europe accounted for 33% of global coffee consumption in 2020/21, amounting to an estimated 3 or more. 244 million tons of espresso. This makes Europe the largest coffee market on the planet and, accordingly, one along with great potential, especially for roasting coffee from exporting nations, like Jamaica.
This project is a real example of the commitment of the Ministry of Foreign Matters and Foreign Trade, by means of its Embassy in Belgium, to deliver on the promises from the Economic Diplomacy Programme, which is being implementing in collaboration with JAMPRO, to promote and protect Jamaica’s commercial interests in the external market. Jamaica Blue Mountain espresso is indeed a national cherish which we must continue to assistance and promote.
Jamaica Blue Mountain Coffee (JBMC) is considered one of Jamaica’s globally recognized and well-loved brands, whose unique, wealthy, and smooth flavour is usually attributable to the favourable weather conditions of the blue mountains associated with Jamaica, the standards assured by the Jamaica Agricultural Commodities Regulatory Authority (JACRA), and the hard work and dedication of our own coffee farmers. I prolong heartiest congratulations to the women and men of Jamaica who give rise to the continued success from the Jamaica Blue Mountain Coffee brand.
