Visit of the Secretary General of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) to India

  • The Secretary-General of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO), H.E. Mr. Dmitry Fedorovich Mezentsev, visited New Delhi on February 23 – 24, 2014, at the invitation of Foreign Secretary, Smt. Sujatha Singh. The Secretary General led a delegation of experts for the SCO Secretariat based in Beijing.
  • India has been actively participating in SCO meetings/activities open to Observers since 2005. The SG’s visit served to further strengthen the institutional linkages between India and the SCO. During the visit, the Secretary General held comprehensive discussions with the Foreign Secretary on various dimensions of India’s current and prospective association with the organization. India reiterated its readiness to play a larger, wider and more constructive role in the SCO. The talks also touched upon regional matters of common and contemporary relevance such as tackling counter-terrorism and narco-trafficking in the region, in the context of the evolving situation in Afghanistan.
  • After the consultations, H.E. Mr. Mezentsev called on Shri Salman Khurshid, Hon’ble External Affairs Minister. Mr Mezentsev also had a detailed interaction at the Institute of Defence Studies and Analyses (IDSA) where he exchanged views with scholars and representatives of think tanks.
