Selection of Yatris for the Kailash Manasarovar Yatra-2013

Minister of External Affairs Shri Salman Khurshid presided today over a computerized draw for the selection of yatris for the Kailash Manasarovar Yatra-2013. The 2013 Yatra is scheduled to begin on 12 June 2013. This year, 1080 yatris will embark on the Yatra in 18 batches between 12 June and 9 September. Each batch will complete the Yatra in 22 days.

The Yatra will pass through the State of Uttarakhand and cross into the Tibet Autonomous Region via Lipulekh Pass. During their journey, yatris will traverse through numerous places of tourist and religious significance.

The Government of India has been conducting the Yatra since 1981 in close cooperation with the Government of the People’s Republic of Chinaunder a bilateral arrangement.

Addressing the media after the computerized draw of lots ceremony, the Minister of External Affairs said that the Yatra is a symbol of cooperation between India and China and contributes towards deepening people-to-people contacts.

A number of facilities are provided by the Government of India to yatris, including medical assistance, security and escort cover till the LipulekhPass on the Indian side, provision of a satellite phone to each batch of yatris for use in case of emergency throughout the Yatra. A Liaison Officer is attached by the Government with each batch of yatris, who is responsible for their general welfare.
