India’s president, Smt. On January 10, 2023, Droupadi Murmu met the President of the Surinamese Republic, Mr. Chandrikapersad Santokhi, in Indore, Madhya Pradesh.
The President expressed his gratitude for Santokhi’s participation in the 17th Pravasi Bharatiya Divas Convention as he welcomed him and his delegation. She was pleased to see that despite leaving India 150 years ago, the Surinamese Indian community has maintained its cultural identity. She wished the celebrations success and was thrilled to learn that Suriname is commemorating the 150th anniversary of the arrival of Indians in June 2023. Despite the great geographic distance, she was pleased to see that Suriname has a sizable Hindi population.
According to the President, Suriname and India are working well together. Our expanding relationships are being fueled by frequent high level visits. She reaffirmed India’s commitment to expanding technical cooperation and assisting Suriname in developing its capacity and skills. The President advised us to collaborate in order to grow our business together.
Additionally, the two leaders talked about ways to improve trade, energy, technology, and cultural cooperation as well as bilateral relations.
