Intellecon and BBA//Fjeldco receive give to explore geothermal heat usage for drying tea in Kenya

Tea production is a very important, even though polluting, industry in Kenya. Utilization of geothermal heat can have a very positive impact on food security and the environmental impact of the industry. The project supports the United Nations Eco friendly Development Goals (SDGs), especially goal eight on good work and economic growth, goal twelve on accountable consumption and production and goal thirteen on climate action. The project has got the potential to significantly reduce Kenya‘s CO2 emissions. Within 2002 an estimated 155, 000 tons of wood were burned in Kenya to dried out tea and other foods. About 1 . 8 tons of CO2 are released for every lot of wood burned. Within 2002, an estimated 300. 500 tons of CO2 were hence released into the atmosphere to dry food in Kenya. It is clear that a lot of CO2 emissions can be prevented by replacing wood burning with geothermal heat. With all the support of the  Sustainable Development Goals Collaboration Fund , consulting company Intellecon and law firm BBA//Fjeldco will explore the possibility of making use of geothermal heat for drying tea in Kenya. The project is in partnership with Kenyan partners Geothermal Advancement Company and Rosekey Food items. An agreement for funding by Icelandic Ministry for International Affairs‘  Sustainable Advancement Goals Partnership Fund   was signed twelve March.
The project is a partnership between consulting company Intellecon and law firm BBA//Fjeldco. Both firms have comprehensive and growing experience in geothermal and other sustainable power projects in developing countries. If the project is successful, there are hopes that more possibilities could follow for work creation and economic growth in Kenya along the lines of establishing cooperation in energy plus food production.
The Sustainable Development Targets Partnership Fund supports Icelandic private sector firms who want to work towards the United Nations‘ Sustainable Development Goals by launching co-operative ventures within developing countries. By participating, private sector firms support increased economic activity within developing countries and enhance their own competitiveness in growing markets. The next deadline with regard to applications to the fund is definitely 3 May. Further information can be obtained on  www.mfa.is/sdgfund .
