Meeting of the Multi-Agency Coordinating Committee for Addressing the Influx of Migrants from Venezuela into Guyana



The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation serves as the focal point of the Coordinating Committee.
The Honourable Hugh Hilton Todd, Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation on Monday, 18 July 2022, convened the meeting of the Multi-Agency Coordinating Committee for Addressing the Influx of Migrants from Venezuela into Guyana.
As part of the Government’s response mechanism, representatives from the various agencies involved in addressing the influx of migrants from Venezuela, provided updates on several initiatives that were undertaken to assist the migrants. Efforts ranged from monitoring, assessing, and providing relief in various forms to the migrants. Areas of relief rendered included access to health, water, sanitation, food, education and other social services.
Among those in attendance were Permanent Secretary, Ambassador Elisabeth Harper; Director of the Frontiers Department (ag), Ms. Donnette Streete, National Security Advisor to the President, Captain Gerald Gouveia; Major General (Ret’d) Joseph Singh, representatives from the Ministry of Human Services and Social Security, Ministry of Education, Civil Defense Commission, Environmental Protection Agency, International Organization for Migration (IOM) and the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR).
Agencies that conducted field visits were also able to highlight gaps and new developments which require continued attention. Through a coordinated and strategic approach, efforts will be enhanced to readily address the migrant situation in Guyana.
