Foreign Minister Meets with Maldivian Counterpart



-Discuss climate change, small state vulnerabilities

Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of the Maldives, His Excellency Abdulla Shahid, today called upon Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, the Honourable Hugh Todd.

During the virtual meeting, they discussed the vulnerabilities of small states, climate change, and the economic impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, among mutual areas of interest.

Also discussed was the candidature of the Maldives for the position of President of the General Assembly (PGA) for the 77th Session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA). Elections are scheduled to be held in June 2021.

The Foreign Ministers were also joined by Minister of State for Foreign Affairs of the Maldives, His Excellency Ahmed Khaleel, Joint Secretary at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Maldives, Ms. Shiuneen Rasheed, and Permanent Representative of the Co-operative Republic of Guyana to the United Nations, Her Excellency Ambassador Carolyn Rodrigues Birkett.

Guyana and the Maldives established diplomatic relations on April 13, 1994, and often collaborate at the multilateral level through organizations such as the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC), the Commonwealth, and the United Nations.
