Foreign Minister meets with Brazilian Senator

The Honourable Hugh Todd, Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, today, met with Mr. Francisco de Assis Rodrigues, Senator of the State of Roraima and his delegation from Brazil.

Minister Todd highlighted that Guyana-Brazil relations are of significant importance to economic integration in the region. He also recognised the advantage of Guyana’s unique geographical location, in relation to the Atlantic Ocean and alluded to the mutual benefits to be derived from such access for Guyana and Brazil.

The Senator alluded to the importance of trade between Guyana and the bordering State of Roraima and informed that the State of Roraima has extensive experience in agriculture production, particularly in soya and corn and utilizes the most advanced technology. In this regard, Minister Todd and Senator Rodrigues expressed optimism for the opportunities that the linkage road from Linden to Lethem will present for the two countries.

Additionally, Minister Todd emphasized that agriculture is the bedrock of Guyana’s economy and informed of Guyana’s leading role in agriculture at the CARICOM level. Minister Todd also stated that some of the major priority areas of the Government of Guyana include food security and agriculture, energy security and infrastructure with a developmental trajectory focusing on the diversification of the economy.

The officials agreed that discussions will continue towards further advancement of relations, as The Presidents of Guyana and Brazil will meet in Paramaribo in January 2022, for a trilateral meeting. Thereafter, the Presidents will meet in Georgetown to focus on areas of bilateral cooperation between Guyana and Brazil.
