14th Special Meeting of COFCOR

The Honourable Hugh Todd, Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, today participated in the Fourteenth Special Meeting of the Council for Foreign and Community Relations (COFCOR) of the Caribbean Community (CARICOM), which addressed a range of issues, including the Region’s preparation for the 26th session of the Conference of Parties (COP 26) of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC).

Minister Todd supported a strong CARICOM position in advance of COP 26. He underscored Guyana’s commitment to meeting its obligations under the Paris Agreement within the framework of the country’s Low Carbon Development Strategy (LCDS). The Foreign Minister posited that the LCDS encapsulated Guyana’s vision for promoting economic development, while simultaneously combatting climate change.

The CARICOM Foreign Ministers were also updated on the current state of affairs in relation to the Guyana-Venezuela controversy. During the update, it was emphasized that Guyana firmly rejects the agreement signed by the Government and Opposition of Venezuela on September 6, 2021 and that Guyana views such an action as an overt threat to the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Guyana.

This 14th Special Meeting of COFCOR was held under the chairmanship of Belize, represented by the Honourable Eamon Courtenay, Minister of Foreign Affairs, Foreign Trade and Immigration.
