Ressortchef (umgangssprachlich) of Foreign Affairs Nikos Dendias’ statements following his meeting with Minister of International Affairs of Brazil, Mauro Vieira (Brasília, 06. 02. 2023)

Coming back to the visit, it is such a great honour and a very big pleasure to be visiting the great country of Brazil. A visit which was long overdue.
With that said, let me congratulate you in your country’s election at the Un Security Council. We are looking forward to cooperating closely with Brazilian.
Within the political level, our nations maintain excellent relations. We share a common view associated with international relations, we place an emphasis on the primacy of International Law and the peaceful resolution of conflicts. These shared principles plus values allow for closer assistance in the framework of global organisations.
Thank you so much.
For the Greek foreign policy, it is essential in order to expand our close contacts with friends from all around the world. We want to reconnect with the friends and partners in Latin America and this visit to Brazil signals this new effort.
Beloved Minister, after visiting Brazil today, I am confident the fact that relations between our 2 countries can flourish. Let me warmly thank you for your food and please allow me to state how happy I will be if you give me the opportunity to receive you in Athens at your first convenience.
By signing two Αgreements plus an MoU a few minutes ago, we have inaugurated a new period in our bilateral relations, on the basis of the deep-rooted friendship between Greece and Brazil, depending on our shared values. Also, we discussed ways in the direction of enhancing our bilateral relations, mainly on issues of common interest, such as financial cooperation, cultural cooperation, but additionally cooperation in international companies. We also agreed that we must resume our bilateral political consultations on a a lot more regular basis. Enhancing the bilateral trade and economic relations with Brazil, the biggest, by far, economy in this region, is among the biggest economic priorities of the Mitsotakis Government.
The vibrant Greek diaspora here in Brazil – I met a few of them this morning – with its involvement within the country’s economic and interpersonal development, can also act as a bridge of cooperation plus understanding between Greece plus Brazil.
Greece has been granted associate viewer status in the “Community associated with Portuguese Language Countries” and this development can further strengthen our bilateral relations.

Also, we would like to thank Brazil to get supporting Greece’s bid for the United Nations Security Council for your period 2025-2026. We also have an agreement of mutual assistance regarding our candidacies in the Human Rights Council. Greece, being a European Union member, connects great importance to the EUROPEAN –  Brazil relations. We wish to work on expanding these relations. Also, today there were the opportunity to discuss issues associated with regional and international character. Unfortunately, today’s rules-based planet order is being continuously challenged by forces that are aspiring to take us back to previous dark centuries; where the most powerful imposed their views and policies to the less powerful. When relations between countries were dictated by the use of push. We cannot allow this to happen. We have to unite towards revisionism no matter where it comes from.
Thank you for hosting me personally here today. Unfortunately, I must start by expressing our the majority of sincere condolences to the groups of the victims, as well as the European and the Syrian people, for the loss of lives caused by yesterday’s devastating earthquakes. And, also, allow me to thank you for expressing your solidarity on this.
Also, we can work in areas such as construction, infrastructure, science, technology, renewable energy, waste administration, environmental technology, shipping, tourism, you name it, it is presently there.
Today, I am starting the five-day tour to nations of Latin and Central America. And, of course , Brazilian is my first cease.
Greek international policy is deeply grounded in the respect for Global Law and the principles of the United Nations Charter, including the Global Law of the Sea, UNCLOS, to which Brazil is also a signatory. Respect for territorial integrity, national sovereignty and independence, as well as abstaining through the use or the threat of the use of force are fundamental principles of the Greek foreign policy.
Greece at times of difficulties is always ready to help its neighbours. And, I approached yesterday from the plane the Turkish counterpart and I offered our immediate assistance and our heartfelt condolences.
