“Turkey is in a state of upheaval and in confusion over its identity in its foreign policy, with the Turkish President making erratic moves both domestically and outside his country”, stated Alternate Minister of Foreign Affairs Miltiadis Varvitsiotis in his interview on SKAI TV’s ‘Atairiasti’, with journalists Ioannis Ntsounos and Christos Koutras.
Regarding the exploratory talks, Mr. Varvitsiotis stressed that “the main role of a Ministry of Foreign Affairs is to communicate with the other side, even in difficult circumstances. That is its role. And the dialogue must continue, no matter how great the disagreement”. He added, however, that “we are certainly still a long way from saying that we are on a path of good and friendly relations”. “It needs a good deal of hard and consistent work”, he underscored, adding that this was the message of the latest meeting of the European Council: that Turkey will have to show long-term commitment for EU-Turkey relations to be normalised. “If Turkey changes its policy, Europe will do the same”, he added.
