Declaration by the Ministry of International Affairs on the Decision of the UNESCO World Heritage Committee’s Extraordinary Session regarding the inscription of Odessa’s Historic Centre on the UNESCO World History List (24. 01. 2023)

Upon instructions in the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Nikos Dendias, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs continues to be engaged in a diplomatic campaign to overcome any bookings, considering the protection of this emblematic city of utmost importance, pertaining to Hellenism and for Ukraine.
Odessa will be inextricably linked to the history of the Greek nation as the town was home to a flourishing Greek community and was the place where the Revolution for the liberation of Greece began.
Moreover, in order to underline the importance that Greece attaches to these areas, the Ressortchef (umgangssprachlich) of Foreign Affairs made the decision that the Greek Consulate Common in Odessa remains functioning and visited the city twice (April 3 and July 12, 2022) even though the Ruskies invasion had already begun.
Immediately after their second visit and having held talks with the city’s local authorities, Minister of International Affairs Nikos Dendias addressed a letter to the Movie director General of UNESCO, Audrey Azoulay, dated July eighteen, 2022, where he expressed the particular Greek Government’s full support for the promotion of Odessa’s inscription on the World Traditions List, offering all possible assistance for the achievement of this goal, at both diplomatic and technical levels.
Greece warmly welcomes this decision as it is the particular successful outcome of coordinated attempts, in which the Greek side got the lead as a member from the Committee (in coordination along with Belgium, Bulgaria, Italy, and Japan) so as to respond straight to Ukraine’s request to protect the town, particularly considering the region’s present state of war.
The UNESCO World Heritage Committee’s Extraordinary Session held on Wednesday 24. 1 . 2023, determined that Odessa’s Historic Centre be inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List.
Grigorios Maraslis was created in Odessa and served as the city’s Mayor with regard to 16 years in the past due 19th century.
