Alternate Minister of Foreign Affairs Miltiadis Varvitsiotis’ interview with OPEN TV’s prime time news and journalist Popi Tsapanidou – main points (21.03.2022)

Greece is in favor of reaching a European consensus on the issue of imposing stricter sanctions against Russia, said Alternate Minister of Foreign Affairs Miltiadis Varvitsiotis in an interview with OPEN TV’s prime time news and journalist Popi Tsapanidou.

Mr. Varvitsiotis, who is in Brussels to participate in tomorrow’s EU General Affairs Council, noted that our country always takes a constructive stance towards reaching consensus between the EU member states, something we also strive for when it comes to our own affairs. He also reiterated that in order for the framework to be stronger, Turkey should also become engaged in imposing sanctions, like other non-EU or NATO countries.

Regarding the situation in Mariupol, the Alternate Minister spoke of a “martyr city”, he said he is shocked by what the Greek Consul Manolis Androulakis recounted about the magnitude of the disaster and stressed that the Greek government has raised the issue of the protection of the Greek community of 120,000 people at the highest level.
