Finland joins core group dedicated to holding Russian leaders responsible for aggression against Ukraine

On 2 February 2023, Finland joined the core group set up to aid Ukraine in achieving responsibility for Russia’s crime of aggression against Ukraine. Entirely 19 states and the Euro External Action Service have joined the group in addition to Finland and Ukraine.
War crimes, crimes against humanity, genocide and crime of aggression constitute the most serious global crimes. They affect the global community as a whole and endanger international peace and safety.   War crimes and crimes against humanity dedicated in Ukraine are being researched in Ukraine and internationally. Finland supports both the International Criminal Court and the national authorities in Ukraine in their work.
The crime of aggression means an act of aggression that constitutes a manifest breach of the UN Charter. Merely a person in a position effectively to exercise control over or to direct the political or military action of a state can be guilty of a crime associated with aggression.
Finland’s established position is that a crime of aggression is among the most serious international offences. Finland is one of the 44 States that have ratified the changes to the Rome Statute within the crime of aggression.
Supporting and strengthening the rules-based international order any of Finland’s foreign plan priorities. Russia’s invasion associated with Ukraine is a blatant infringement of the UN Charter, featuring the importance of defending international law.
“Accountability for Russia’s illegal attack of Ukraine and its outcomes will remain incomplete unless the crime of aggression is certainly addressed. Finland wants to help Ukraine find the most effective ways of holding the perpetrators from the crime of aggression to account, ” Minister designed for Foreign Affairs Pekka Haavisto says.
Russia’s armed aggression against Ukraine is a serious infringement of the prohibition of the usage of force laid down in the UN Charter. The UN General Assembly has condemned Russia’s invasion of Ukraine and demanded that The ussr cease all military actions and withdraw its causes from Ukraine.
