EU Foreign Affairs Council to discuss Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, Great Lakes region of Africa, and Western Balkans

The foreign ministers will exchange views on the Great Lakes region of Africa. Finland is concerned about the instability in the region and supports the EU’s comprehensive approach to the region. Finland supports regional and local peace efforts and emphasises the importance of involving civil society.
EU foreign ministers will convene in Brussels on 14 November. Minister for Foreign Affairs Pekka Haavisto will represent Finland at the meeting.
The EU foreign ministers will continue their discussion on Russia’s aggression against Ukraine. Finland strongly condemns Russia’s attempts to change the internationally recognised borders of Ukraine. Finland supports Ukraine’s independence, sovereignty and territorial integrity. Finland responds to Russia’s actions as part of the European Union.
The Council will have a discussion on current affairs, including the situation in Lebanon and Iran, the recent COP27 meeting on climate and the upcoming COP15 meeting on biodiversity.
“The EU must continue and step up its support to Ukraine. Finland welcomes the setting up of an EU military assistance mission in support of Ukraine, and we intend to take part in it. We are also in favour of preparing further sanctions against Russia,” Foreign Minister Haavisto said in anticipation of the Council meeting.

In addition, the ministers will discuss the topical situation in the Western Balkans. Finland underlines the increasing importance of the Western Balkan countries committing themselves to the values and common foreign and security policy of the EU.
The foreign ministers will have an informal exchange of views over breakfast with the Belarusian opposition leader Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya.
