Fiji – Australia cooperation increases through Vuvale partnership

The Vuvale Partnership between Fiji and Australia continues to expand mutual cooperation in areas of climate resilience, economic recovery and regional development. This was articulated at a courtesy call received by the Permanent Secretary (PS) for the Office of the Prime and Foreign Affairs Mr. Yogesh Karan from the Chargé d’affaires of the Australian High Commission, Mr. John Williams, today (13/9/22). In response, Mr. Williams reaffirmed Australia’s continued support to Fiji and the Pacific in shared interests and priorities. PS Karan said the Vuvale Partnership presents great opportunities for further cooperation between Fiji and Australia. Australia’s support to Fiji in economic recovery and rebuilding efforts from the COVID-19 pandemic and natural disasters, was acknowledged at the meeting. He acknowledged the increase in security partnerships between the two nations over the years through capacity building programs and training. Earlier this year, Blackrock Peacekeeping and Humanitarian Assistance and Disaster Relief Camp was officially opened – which is a culmination of Fiji- Australia’s joint security efforts. PS Karan also conveyed the Fijian Government’s best wishes to Mr. Williams, with assurances of the Fijian Government’s commitment to work closely with Australia on the “2050 Strategy for the Blue Pacific Continent” which is now the foundation document for the Pacific’s regional development. Discussions highlighted Australia’s effort in strengthening labor mobility arrangements through the Pacific Australia Labour Mobility (PALM) scheme and further increasing opportunities for Fijian workers, through cooperation in this area. PS Karan commended Australia’s commitment in making climate change a priority and Fiji looks forward for Australia’s continued support in the lead up to the COP27 in Egypt in November. Fiji and Australia through the Vuvale Partnership have strengthened engagements in a wide range of areas including health, education, tourism, trade and investment, labor mobility, sports, defence, humanitarian assistance and disaster relief.
