Denmark launches Global Goals action plan

Under the plan, all relevant aspects of new Danish legislation will be assessed in relation to the Global Goals, which apply to all the world’s countries, not just the world’s poor.

The launch will take place at a large reception in Copenhagen’s UN City, with the participation of Minister of Finance Kristian Jensen, Minister for Development Cooperation Ulla Tørnæs and more than 200 guests representing government agencies, the business community, civil society and schools.

“Denmark is leading the way when it comes to ensuring sustainable development – both in Denmark and in developing countries. With the national action plan, new Danish legislation will now be assessed in relation to the Global Goals. This will ensure the incorporation of the goals into our daily legislative work, and we have also committed to reporting annually on our progress,” says Kristian Jensen, who will be representing Denmark this July at the first Global Goals review at the UN in New York.

Minister for Development Cooperation Ulla Tørnæs looks forward to using the action plan as a tool for involving Denmark’s public authorities, businesses and civil society in the fulfilment of the Global Goals.

“The highly ambitious Global Goals demand a commitment from us all. Public authorities, the business community and civil society must all work together to create sustainable development and growth. This applies both in Denmark and to our efforts in developing countries, which include collaborations with local authorities to engage a wide range of ministries, agencies, municipalities and private sector companies,” says Ulla Tørnæs.

Ulla Tørnæs is also announcing the results of a new survey today, which shows increased awareness the UN’s 17 Global Goals among Danes. However, the overall figure is still unsatisfactory at just 12%.

“Given the broad focus and historic ambition to eradicate all poverty and create sustainable development worldwide, there’s no doubt that awareness of the Global Goals must reach across all of Denmark. This is my ambition, and it will be very clearly reflected in how the Ministry of Foreign Affairs communicates about Denmark’s efforts in emerging and developing countries,” says Ulla Tørnæs.
