Danish government supports mega events for LGBTI people

It is the first time ever that a potential host city bids to host both WorldPride and EuroGames. Copenhagen 2021 could therefore become a historic event, uniting culture, sport and the struggle for equal rights in Copenhagen.

“I am happy and proud that the Danish government, with the Prime Minister at the helm, is supporting efforts to bring WorldPride and EuroGames to Copenhagen in 2021. It is important for us to highlight that everyone – regardless their of gender, sexual orientation or gender identity – must be able to express themselves freely. Denmark is a pioneer when it comes to LGBTI rights, and this makes us an obvious host,” says Minister for Equal Opportunities, Karen Ellemann.

The idea for Copenhagen 2021 comes from Copenhagen Pride and the inclusive sports club Pan Idræt, which have established the project organisation Happy Copenhagen to handle the bidding process and implementation of the global mega event.

“We are putting forward an innovative and ambitious bid, and it is fantastic to have the government support our efforts. Never before has this level of political support been seen in the arrangement of neither WorldPride nor EuroGames. It emphasises Denmark’s desire to stand at the very forefront of the struggle for diversity,” says Lars Christian Østergreen, Managing Director at Happy Copenhagen.

Happy Copenhagen estimates that Copenhagen 2021 will attract around half a million people to the city as both participants and spectators, thereby making Denmark and Copenhagen’s brand as devoted LGBTI rights advocates even stronger. Lars Henriksen, Chair of Copenhagen Pride, has presented the Danish bid to host Worldpride in Indianapolis.

WorldPride is an international LGBTI cultural festival, which counts cities including Rome, London and Toronto as its previous hosts – and which will be hosted by Madrid in 2017. It is the organisation InterPride that chooses who will host the event at its AGM in October.

EuroGames is a European LGBTQ sports event, which has been held in cities including Berlin, Barcelona and Stockholm. Copenhagen was also the host city in 2003. The European Gay & Lesbian Sport Federation will announce the host city at its AGM in March 2018.
