Athens, October 8. A tribute and remembrance event to the heroic guerrilla man Ernesto Che Guevara was held at the Studio New Star Art cinema, organized by Velissarios Kossivakis, director of New Star and the Hellenic-Cuban Association of Friendship and Solidarity, under the auspices of the Embassy of the Republic from Cuba in Athens. The main speakers were, Zelmys Maria Dominguez Cortina, ambassador of the Republic of Cuba in Greece and Nikos Karandreas, president of the Hellenic-Cuban Association of Friendship and Solidarity. Representatives of the co-organizing organizations of the event also dedicated greetings, which were: Despina Markou, president of EEDDA (Greek Committee for World Democratic Solidarity); Stavros Tassos, president of EEDYE (Greek Committee for International Distension and Peace) and Dimitris Patelis, of the Greek Committee for the awarding of the 2021 Nobel Peace Prize to the Henry Reeve Medical Brigade of Cuba. The moderator was Velissarios Kossivakis. Before beginning the speeches, Velisarios Kossivakis requested a minute of silence for the recent death of the great Greek musician and revolutionary Mikis Theodorakis, who was a great friend of Che and Fidel Castro. The speakers explained Che’s life and work, and his ideological and internationalist legacy, as an example of the struggle for a better world. The ambassador also explained the current situation in Cuba, the intensification of the criminal economic, commercial and financial blockade of the United States against Cuba, the fight against the pandemic and thanked the support of the Greek friends for the Cuban people. The other speakers reaffirmed their solidarity and friendship, as well as the condemnation of the unjust US blockade of Cuba. Later a beautiful Greek song dedicated to Che was performed. In addition, the film “CHE, a new man” by Tristán Bauer, which was released for the first time in Greece with Greek subtitles, was screened. Among the more than 100 people present were the Ambassador of Venezuela, representatives of various political forces, parliamentarians and MEPs of the Communist Party of Greece (KKE); solidarity associations, Cubans residing in Greece and the general public. It was a great event of remembrance of a great man and of militant solidarity with the heroic Cuban people, which once again showed the friendship between the peoples of Cuba and Greece.
