The University of Thessaly, an important academic and scientific institution in Central Greece, hosted in the city of Volos the presentation of the book José Martí and “the Greek” on the night of last Wednesday, January 19, in a ceremony greeted by Dr. Zissis Mamouris, Rector of the University, who welcomed the Ambassador of Cuba to the Hellenic Republic, Zelmys Domínguez Cortina, and all those present, including vice-rectors, professors and students of the university, as well as people from other cities of the region, such as Larissa, the capital city of Thessaly, the most important agricultural region in Greece, which is also home to the renowned Mount Olympus.
The Ambassador of Cuba greeted those present, referred to the meaning of the work and thanked the university authorities for welcoming this presentation and for the fruitful meeting previously held with the Rector Mamouris and the team of vice rectors of the University, in the which topics of mutual interest and possible lines of collaboration with related Cuban institutions were addressed.
Later, the professor, doctor of sciences, dean, Panagiotis Politis, main organizer of the event, referred to the meaning of the work José Martí and “the Greek” in the knowledge of the deep cultural, libertarian and independentist bridges between Cuba and Greece. Then the author made a presentation of the work and sincerely thanked the dozens of people present, for their assistance and for the interest shown in the subject addressed by the book, and particularly those who traveled even more than 200 kilometers to attend this presentation. .
The presentation ceremony for José Martí and “what is Greek” in Volos, which is the sixth to take place in Greece, was attended by journalists from the three newspapers in the city of Volos, who published detailed reports on the event in your morning edition yesterday.
Volos is located about 330 kilometers north of Athens and about 215 kilometers south of Thessaloniki, and is the capital of the peripheral unit of Magnesia. Its coasts are bathed by the Pagasetic Gulf, at the foot of the well-known Mount Pelion, land of the Centaurs, according to mythology. The modern city of Volos was built in the area of the ancient city of Iolcus, homeland of the mythical Jason, who, accompanied by the Argonauts -crew members of the ship Argos- left from this site in search of the Golden Fleece to Colchis, in a famous Greek mythological passage.
Up to this point came the influence of the thought of the Cuban National Hero, who on more than one occasion referred to these regions and whose work on Greece, its culture and its struggles, has generated particular interest and admiration in the Hellenic country, reinforced by this modest work that was published in the Greek language, in the year of the 200th anniversary of the independence of Greece. The book, whose publication was carried out by the Athenian publishing house TOPOS, was acquired by many people during the presentation at the University of Thessaly, and during its signing by the author, unforgettable exchanges took place towards Martí, towards his work and his struggle, and towards the work and resistance of the heroic people of Cuba.
Thank you Volos. Thank you University of Thessaly. Thank you Panagiotis Politis.
On January 31, 2022, José Martí and “the Greek” will be presented at the equally important Greek University of the Mediterranean, located in Iraklio, capital of the island of Crete, the largest island in Greece and the cradle of the Minoan civilization, where there is also a deep love for the people of Cuba and their example of resistance, solidarity and peace.
