The countries of the South need a G-77 and China that is more united in its diversity against the complex processes and scenarios drawing near.

New York, January 14th, 2022.Cuba reiterated today its commitment to support the Group of 77 and China, and placed emphasis on the need to count this year 2022 on a stronger, more united, proactive and supportive Group, in defense of its principles and interests, in the face of the complex processes and scenarios drawing closer, and taking into account the continuity of the remote working modalities.

Such statement was made by the Ambassador and Permanent Representative of Cuba to the United Nations, Pedro Luis Pedroso Cuesta at the handover ceremony of the G-77 and China Chairmanship, from the Republic of Guinea to the Islamic Republic of Pakistan, who will assume this role throughout this year.

In his remarks, Mr. Pedroso Cuesta acknowledged the commitment and leadership performed by the Republic of Guinea, particularly the efforts of Ambassador Aly Diane, Permanent Representative of the Republic of Guinea, and his team. He also welcomed the Islamic Republic of Pakistan, convinced, he mentioned, that under the leadership of Ambassador Munir Akram, Permanent Representative of the Islamic Republic of Pakistan, and his team, the Group of 77 and China will continue to promote and defend the interests of the countries of the South with the colossal work-related challenge imposed by the COVID-19 pandemic.

The Cuban representative reiterated Ambassador Munir Akram the support of Cuba for his endeavors, wished him success and stated the island’s full readiness to continue to strengthen the historic ties between the two nations.

Later on, Pedroso expressed his considerations on consensus as a core principle that must be preserved in the Group’s functioning, and that the current working methods, as well as the established practices that have guided the Group´s work and decisions are clear and consistent, and have allowed it -over the years- to maintain its unity and solidarity, especially in times of great differences among our members.

He said: “The G-77 encompasses more than half of the world’s population and two-thirds of the UN Member States. That is why our diversity is our strength. It is our responsibility to lead the interests and aspirations of developing peoples in today’s complex international context, based on a strengthened multilateralism and an enhanced international cooperation and solidarity, including a renewed South-South cooperation among our peoples.

“Within and outside the United Nations, the G-77 has become a stronghold in defense of unity, solidarity, cooperation and the achievement of the right to development for our countries, as well as in pursuit of the efforts to achieve a more just and equitable international order,” he concluded.
