Secretary General of the Pan-African Writers´ Association visits the Embassy of Cuba in Ghana.

The Ambassador of Cuba, Pedro Luis Despaigne González received a courtesy visit from the Secretary General of the Pan-African Writers´ Association (PAWA), Dr. Wale Okediran, leading a representation of officials from that organization with continental scope.

Both parties discussed possibilities of cooperation in the field of culture, with the sector of letters being the fundamental axis.

Dr. Wale Okediran, who is a doctor by profession, praised Cuba’s preparation in the confrontation with COVID-19, and the information that has been disseminated on advanced research in obtaining vaccines to face the virus. He also showed his interest in the historical-cultural ties between Cuba and Africa; about which the Cuban Ambassador explained, highlighting the contribution of Africa in the formation of Cuban nationality.

PAWA is a cultural institution based in Accra, Ghana. It was founded in November 1989. It is currently made up of writers’ associations from 35 African countries, and also with working ties with the diaspora. Its mission is to strengthen cultural and economic ties between the peoples of the African continent in the context of recognized cultural, political and economic heritage. Many prominent African thinkers and writers have played prominent roles in PAWA’s activities, including Nobel laureates Wole Soyinka and Nadine Gordimer, Emeritus Professor J. H. Kwabena Nketia, Professor Femi Osofisan, Professor Ali Mazrui, and others.

The Secretary General of PAWA, who is from Nigeria, was a member of the Parliament of that country between 2004-2008, from his youth he considered himself a lover of writing. During the visit to the Cuban embassy he was accompanied by Mrs. Patricia Nana Mensah, Head of Projects; Louis Mensah, Accountant; and Fioklou Reine, Administrator. (Cubaminrex / Embacuba Ghana)
