Victoria, November 26, 2021 – The Seychelles Minister of Foreign Affairs and Tourism, Sylvestre Radegonde and the Mayor of the City of Victoria, David Andre, attended this Friday evening the tribute to Fidel Castro, on the occasion of the fifth anniversary of his death, which took place at the National Museum of History, under the auspices of the Cuban Embassy and friends of the Movement of Solidarity with the Island.

In his speech, André Pool, a Cuban graduate and member of the Central Committee of the United Seychelles Party, referred to the formidable personality of the Commander-in-Chief, describing him as one of the great leaders of the last century, an inspiration for many, especially for the most oppressed. He highlighted the important role played by Cuba, under Fidel’s leadership, in the liberation of the African continent.

He further underlined the ties that unite Cuba and Seychelles since the establishment of diplomatic relations in the late 1970s, the scholarship programs, exchanges and invaluable medical assistance from Cuba, as well as the valuable support in agriculture and other areas.

On behalf of the United Seychelles Party, André Pool, strongly condemned the economic blockade imposed on the island by the U.S. government, despite which Cuba continues to offer assistance to many countries over the world, especially African countries, which is part of Fidel’s legacy: international solidarity.

As part of the program, the documentary “Fidel es Fidel” by filmmaker Roberto Chile was screened, which moved the audience with a journey through important moments of Fidel’s political life.

In closing, Cuban Ambassador Martha Hernández Caneiro, thanked the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Seychelles, the Institute of Culture, Heritage and the Arts and the friends of Cuba for their support for the realization of this activity.

She reaffirmed that Seychelles has the support of Cuba and the political will of her government to continue expanding collaboration in all possible areas.

The tribute was attended by Ambassadors and members of the accredited Diplomatic Corps, representatives of various institutions, Seychellois graduates in Cuba and a representation of the Cuban Medical Brigade.
