Canberra, 25th January 2021.- Several members of the Australia-Cuba Parliamentary Group at the federal level recently signed the nomination of the International Medical Brigade ¨Henry Reeve¨ for the 2021 Nobel Peace Prize. The federal member of the Parliament (MP) for the Labor Party, Maria Vamvakinou, formally registered the aforementioned nomination to the Norwegian Nobel Committee on behalf of the eleven signatory MPs.

According to the sent document, the Cuban medical brigade would be worthy of such an important award in recognition of the medical and humanitarian work demonstrated in the context of the current Covid-19 pandemic, distinguishing itself for its exemplary contribution to humanity in the face of the un precedent challenges in today´s world.

The text highlights that over 3,700 Cuban medical professionals and health workers, consisting of 53 brigades, have risked their own personal safety in 39 countries to selflessly tackle the devastating impact of the pandemic.

In addition, the writing stresses that, since its creation in 2005 the Henry Reeve International Medical Brigade has saved an estimated 90,000 lives affected by natural disasters and health emergencies in several countries, such as the 2005 earthquake in Pakistan, the 2010 cholera epidemic in Haiti and the 2014 Ebola outbreak in West Africa.

The nomination letter concludes by underlining that now, more than ever, international cooperation and solidarity amongst the world’s population is imperative to effectively confront global challenges such as COVID-19.
