Group “Friends of Cuba-Sri – Lanka” condemns inclusion of Cuba in the list of states sponsor of terrorism

Sri Lanka, February 24, 2021. – “Friends of Cuba – Sri Lanka”, a collection of Sri Lankan intellectuals, sent a letter to the United States Ambassador in Colombo, strongly condemning the action of the State Department , to include Cuba in the list of countries sponsoring terrorism, while joining the progressive forces that demand that this action be immediately reversed.

The full text of the letter is as follows:

“9 February 2021

Alaina B. Teplitz

US Ambassador to Sri Lanka

210 Galle Road

Colombo 03

Sri Lanka

Dear Madam,

The statement issued by “Friends of Cuba – Sri Lanka.”

Friends of Cuba – Sri Lanka, a collection of Sri Lankan intellectuals, has resolved to issue the following statement regarding your government’s recent action by listing Cuba in the list of countries sponsoring terrorism.

We strongly condemn the US state department’s action to designate Cuba as a state sponsor of terrorism. We believe this action aims to disrupt the people of the two countries’ progress to normalize their relationship in the recent past.

The whole world knows the process of American state department’s designations of “countries sponsoring terrorism” is entirely political. Compiling a list of state sponsors of terrorism without examining US involvement with political violence in Central America and worldwide, shows their double standards. It is a well-known fact that the US provides sanctuary for foreign political and military figures associated with the world’s repressive right-wing regimes. The US definition of terrorism does not include the acts of terrorism committed by governments against their own citizens, thus diverting attention from the American support for the dictatorships. Another cruel act by the US to destroy Cuba is the “unjust” financial and trade embargo and blockade. This brutal act has brought immense hardships to Cuban people and had cost the country’s economy $130 billion over the last six decades.

Henry Reeve Medical Brigade is working voluntarily all over the world to help countries fight COVID 19 pandemic. This cowardly action has caused immense problems for their work due to the difficulties in obtaining biomedical equipment for their operations.

Therefore, we join hands with other progressive forces the US government to demand these brutal actions be reverted immediately and allow Cuban people to achieve development and prosperity promised by their revolution.
