Havana, 24 March 2022. The minors involved in the events that took place in Cuba on July 11-12, 2021, are not subject to criminal law and receive pedagogical, formative and civic education, an official source said last Wednesday.
Colonel Idays Borges, head of the Directorate of Attention to Minors at the Ministry of the Interior (Minint), noted that the treatment of people under 16 years of age is given through educational strategies for future social reintegration.
In statements to Granma newspaper, Borges explained that the measures applied to those who incurred in last year’s riots were those established in Decree-Law 64/82, including the admission to Conduct Schools attached to the Ministry of Education and the Center for Integral Training of Minint, as well as providing care to the parents and other community factors.
She affirmed that at these institutions minors practice sports, receive training and cultural activities, receive medical care, adequate food and are offered comprehensive preparation in basic secondary education and trades, as well as other forms of vocational training and teaching and extracurricular activities.
“The Comprehensive Training Schools have regulations that are similar to those of centers attached to the National Education Schools of the national education system, which organizes the life schedule of the students and the teaching staff,” she said.
Borges ratified President Miguel Diaz-Canel’s statement, when he affirmed last December 17: “No child under 16 years of age is incarcerated in common prisons, because the Cuban Law does not imprison children. We Comprehensive Training Schools for the care of minors. Enough of these fallacies!
