Cuban women lead development and climate change policies in Cuba

Press Release

New York, 17 March 2022. The Secretary-General of the Federation of Cuban Women and member of the Council of State of the Republic of Cuba, Teresa Amarelle Boué, participated in the general debate of the 66th session of the Commission on the Status of Women (CSW).

The highest representative of Cuban women explained how the island is advancing in the implementation of its development strategy, including the execution of its plan to confront climate change, known as Task Life, which focuses on the protection of human life with quality and a gender perspective.

Amarelle Boué also illustrated how the Caribbean nation coordinates national programs, plans and projects related to climate change with the promotion of women’s economic empowerment, their access to land and other natural resources, and greater participation in urban, suburban and family agriculture.

All this, she noted, occurs under the protection granted by the National Program for the Advancement of Women, a Cuban state agenda to achieve greater comprehensiveness and effectiveness in the prevention and elimination of manifestations of discrimination against women, approved in March 2021.

She gave examples of how a high number of women in Cuba are heads of management centers for risk reduction and responsible for early warning points in their territories, or have responsibilities in their communities.

According to statistics from the World Intellectual Property Organization, Cuba ranks first among women engaged in inventive activity, with 53 percent of the total number of persons cited in international patent applications.

Amarelle Boué recalled that the advancement of Cuban women occurs in spite of the unprecedented effects of the economic, commercial and financial blockade imposed by the government of the United States, even in pandemic conditions.

The Commission on the Status of Women (CSW) is the main international intergovernmental body dedicated exclusively to the promotion of gender equality and the empowerment of women, since its establishment on 21 June 1946.

CSW 66 will be in session at the United Nations from 14 to 25 March 2022. Representatives of Member States, UN entities and Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs) in consultative status with ECOSOC from all regions of the world attend the session.
