Cuban Head of Mission in Liberia denounces damages caused by the blockade against Cuba.

Monrovia, March 16, 2021 – In an exchange with local Liberian media, the Cuban Head of Mission Mercedes L. Martínez Herrera denounced the damages caused by the economic, commercial and financial blockade imposed on Cuba for more than 6 decades.

The Cuban diplomat referred to the progressive tightening of the blockade, the unprecedented levels of hostility reached due to the numerous regulations and provisions issued by the U.S. government against Cuba, and the coercive economic actions and measures imposed against Cuba with the intention of intervening in the internal affairs of the country.

It declared that no citizen or sector of the Cuban economy escapes the effects of the blockade, which hinders the development that any country has the right to build in a sovereign manner due to the fact that the blockade constitutes a massive, flagrant and systematic violation of the human rights of all Cubans. Because of its declared purpose and the political, legal and administrative framework on which it is based, it qualifies as an act of genocide.

In speaking about the effects of the blockade during the current pandemic, he alleged that the scourge of the COVID-19 pandemic has posed notable challenges for Cuba, and the country’s efforts to combat it have been significantly limited due to the regulations of the U.S. blockade. The genocidal character of this policy has been reinforced in the midst of the confrontation with the new coronavirus, since the US government has made use of it, and in particular of its extraterritorial component, to deliberately deprive the Cuban people of the necessary inputs to combat the pandemic.
