Cuban government congratulates doctors on Latin American Medicine Day

Havana, 3 December 2021. The president of Cuba, Miguel Díaz-Canel, congratulated the Cuban doctors on the Day of Latin American Medicine, a date instituted in honor of the birth of Dr. Carlos J. Finlay.

“To our doctors, who together with the scientists have saved the country, many congratulations and infinite gratitude (…) May the applause return today for you and for each life saved from #COVID19. Our heroes wear white coats”, the president tweeted.

The Prime Minister, Manuel Marrero, also tweeted congratulating those he called “heroes in white coats” and the pride of Cuba’s inhabitants.

Marrero quoted Fidel Castro when he offered the cooperation of Cuban doctors to the people of the United States to help in the fight against Ebola in 2014, just as they did in West Africa.

“Medical personnel who go to any places to save lives, even at the risk of losing theirs, is the greatest example of solidarity that human beings can offer,” Fidel Castro said at the time.

Cuban Foreign Minister Bruno Rodríguez also tweeted expressing admiration and respect for workers and students of the health sector for “so much altruism, dedication, solidarity and heroism, inside and outside the country, in the fight against #COVID19.”

“We are counting on you, faithful heirs to the legacy of #Finlay and #Fidel, for the great challenges that lie ahead,” tweeted José Ángel Portal, Minister of Public Health of Cuba.
