Cuban diplomats in Barbados participated in the Festival in honor of International Poetry Day in Freedom Park, Bridgetown’s Golden Square.

Poet Winston Farrell from Barbados called on the country’s poets to celebrate Poetry Day at the recently opened Freedom Park in the Golden Square of Downtown Bridgetown. There, together with the priest Baba John Howell, he acknowledged the presence of the Cuban diplomats and invited the Ambassador to participate reflecting the presence of Cuba and its constant contribution to the Caribbean, despite being constantly harassed by the US blockade. At the opening of the meeting, the Ambassador thanked the invitation and the words of recognition to Cuba and in tribute to International Poetry Day, he read the poem ¨I am somebody¨ from the bilingual edition of the recent collection of poems by Cuban poet Nancy Morejón entitled ¨Madrigal for a Black Prince¨, dedicated to George Floyd and his horrible murder at the hands of US police officers. as well as to the world pan-Africanist movement ¨Black Lives Matter¨.

Both, their own works and those of recently deceased great Barbadian poets, lead by Kamau Brathwaite’s poem ¨Negus¨, Farrell Himself, the brothers Gilkes poets, Antarrah and Frank, Dr. Weekes, Irijah, Alister Alexander, and the young talent, Abianne Fenty, all of them accompanied by a friendly and accomplice public in an environment dedicated to the new Republic which also consecrates the space in which the Barbadian National Hero Clement Payne, lawyer, began the labor struggles of the sugar workers in the decade of the 30s of the last century that gave rise to the labor and trade union movement in this Caribbean country.

The wall of brick blocks that encloses the surroundings of the park, bears surnames in each piece to bring together those of all the families in the country, marking the idea that these are the bricks that build the new Republic of Barbados.
