Cuban Ambassador to Ghana attends the state funeral of former President Jerry John Rawlings. Fidel Castro is mentioned by the President.

The Ambassador Pedro Luis Despaigne González, as official representative of the government of Cuba, participated in the state funeral held in honor of the late former President of Ghana, Flt Lt (Rtd) Jerry John Rawlings in the Black Star Square in Accra, the country’s capital.

The ceremony was attended by the President and Vice President of Ghana, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo and Alhaji Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, respectively; the Presidents of Liberia, George Weah and of Sierra Leone, Julius Maada Bio; relatives of the deceased, headed by the widow, Mrs. Nana Konadu Agyeman-Rawlings along with her four children; so did former Ghanaian Presidents John Agyekum Kufuor and John Dramani Mahami. Other Ghanaian leaders, representatives of various political parties, members of the armed and security institutions, representatives of the Diplomatic Corps and the general public were in attendance.

The President of Ghana, in his farewell remarks, referring to Rawlings expressed, “I called him ´Comandante,” because of his admiration for the famous Latin American revolutionaries Fidel Castro, Hugo Chavez and Daniel Ortega, a nickname which seemed to please him”.

The remains of the former Ghanaian President were deposited in the new Military Cemetery located behind the Burma Camp, home to one of the largest military base of the Ghanaian Armed Forces. (Cubaminrex / Embacuba Ghana)
