New York, 28 January 2021. Today Ana Silvia Rodríguez Abascal, Deputy Permanent Representative of Cuba to the United Nations, reiterated the support of her country for the efforts of the UN Secretary-General, António Guterres, especially in the defense of multilateralism and international law, diplomacy for peace, development and respect among nations.
During her statement on item 115: Report of the Secretary-General on the work of the Organization, Mrs. Rodríguez Abascal expressed that the COVID-19 pandemic, which has exacerbated inequalities and significantly heightened the challenges for all, especially for developing countries, has laid bare the need to step up our actions if we are to meet the goals of the 2030 Agenda in full and on time, which will not be possible without a greater share of cooperation, international solidarity and multilateralism.
The Cuban Ambassador pointed out that although the Secretary-General made an appeal for the lifting of sanctions imposed to countries in order to ensure access to food, essential supplies, COVID-19 tests and medical support, it is regrettable that this appeal was not reflected in the document under discussion.
In this regard, Mrs. Rodríguez once again denounced the criminal and genocidal economic, commercial and financial blockade imposed by the United States against Cuba and maliciously intensified by the previous US administration. She affirmed that during President Trump´s administration, unprecedented measures and actions were announced and taken, which stood out for their systematicity. She noted that all spheres of society and daily life of Cubans suffered to a significant degree from the impact of this policy,
