Cuba reiterates its positions on the situation in the Middle East, including the Palestinian question in the current international context

New York, 26 January 2021. The Cuban delegation reiterated its deep concern over the impact of COVID-19 on the countries of the Middle East and called for serious efforts to prevent any action that could lead to a sharper deterioration of stability and security in that region.

That position was endorsed by Pedro Luis Pedroso Cuesta, Permanent Representative of Cuba to the United Nations, in a statement submitted to the first open debate of this year at the Security Council on the situation in the Middle East, including the Palestinian question.

In his statement, Pedroso ratifies the unrestricted support of Cuba for a comprehensive, just and lasting solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, which allows the Palestinian people to exercise their right to self-determination and to have an independent and sovereign State on the pre-1967 borders, with East Jerusalem as its capital and which guarantees the right to return for the refugees.

Moreover, it states the unwavering solidarity with the Palestinian people and government and he support for Palestine’s entry as a full member into the United Nations. Likewise, it supports its President´s initiative to hold an international peace conference.

The text affirms that the aggressive, unilateral and unjustified actions by the United States in the Middle East severely undermine the legitimate interests of Arab and Islamic nations and lead to a dangerous escalation in the region.

On the other hand, it highlights our rejection of the so-called “Deal of the Century”, drawn up by the previous US administration, which ignores the two-State solution that has been historically supported by the United Nations, the Non-Aligned Movement, the League of Arab States, the Organization of Islamic Cooperation and other international actors.
