Cuba reaffirms at UN Security Council its unwavering solidarity with the Syrian people

New York, 26 January 2021. In the first open debate this year in the Security Council on the situation in the Middle East, including the Palestinian question, Pedro Luis Pedroso Cuesta, Permanent Representative of Cuba to the United Nations, supported the demand of the Syrian government to recover the Golan Heights, seized by Israel in 1967, and called, once again, for the total and unconditional withdrawal of Israel from the Syrian Golan and all occupied Arab territories.

Pedroso stated that the unilateral decision of the United States government to recognize Jerusalem as the capital of Israel, to establish its diplomatic mission in that city, disrespecting its historical status, as well as recognizing Israel’s sovereignty over the Syrian Golan, constitute serious violations of the United Nations Charter, international law and the relevant Security Council resolutions.

The diplomat strongly condemned the US sanctions against Syria and the implementation of the “Caesar Act”, which hampers the reconstruction of that country, even more in the complex scenario of COVID-19, and violates the human rights of the Syrian people.

In addition to that, he stressed Cuba´s support for the need to seek a peaceful and negotiated solution to the situation imposed on Syria, without foreign involvement and with full respect for its sovereignty and territorial integrity.
