Cuba favors proclamation of 2022 as “International Year of Basic Sciences for Sustainable Development”.

New York, 2 December 2021. Cuba welcomed the declaration “International Year of Basic Sciences for Sustainable Development, 2022”, proclaimed today by the United Nations.

Speaking on draft resolution A/76/L.12, entitled “International Year of Basic Sciences for Sustainable Development, 2022,” Frank Téllez, Third Secretary of the Permanent Mission of Cuba, expressed the benefit of recognizing the usefulness of science in development and society in general, which will require stronger and more unanimous support from multilateral organizations, at a time when the COVID-19 pandemic has posed an unprecedented global health, economic and social challenge.

Téllez stated that even though the world has responded to common challenges by combining the most advanced intelligence and resources, the benefits are not shared by all, as a consequence of the unequal, asymmetrically interconnected and interdependent world in which we live.

For Cuba, as a member country of the International Committee created to celebrate this anniversary, the role of multilateralism and the United Nations in promoting science for development is more relevant than ever,” added Téllez.

In this context, the Cuban diplomat explained Cuba’s significant advances in several sectors such as biotechnology and genetics, which have led to the creation of three COVID-19 vaccines and two vaccine candidates, which are also the result of the government’s political will, expressed in the development achieved in the Basic Sciences sector.

The year 2022 will be propitious to promote and foster the Basic Sciences and their decisive role for sustainable development, with emphasis on the training of new generations of scientists and conscious citizens who will work for the sustainability of the planet.
