Cuba calls for preservation of multilateralism and UN´s credibility

New York, 11 June 2021. Cuba participated today at the presentation of the Security Council Annual Report, where it stated that greater transparency in the work of the Security Council will contribute to its effective performance on behalf of all Member States, in accordance with article 24 of the Charter of the United Nations and underscored that the Council must represent the interests of all UN Member States, in order to preserve multilateralism and the credibility of the Organization.

The Permanent Representative of Cuba to the United Nations, Ambassador Pedro L. Pedroso Cuesta, regretted that year after year, the demand of the majority of Member States of the Organization that these reports be exhaustive and analytical, so as to contribute to an exercise of true accountability to the General Assembly, is disregarded. He highlighted that the report also fails to mention the violations of the Security Council´s own resolutions, in particular resolution 2334 (2016), while Israel, with impunity, continues to expand its illegal settlements in the occupied Palestinian territories and threatens to annex the territories of the Jordan Valley and other parts of the West Bank and East Jerusalem.

Pedroso Cuesta reiterated Cuba´s support for a comprehensive Security Council reform, including its working methods, with a view to making it a transparent, democratic and representative organ, in line with the evolution of the United Nations membership.
