Cuba acknowledges UNDP´s support for the fight against COVID-19

New York, 2 February 2021. Cuba participated today at the debate of the segment dedicated to the United Nations Development Programme of the first regular session of the UNDP/UNFPA/UNOPS Executive Board (United Nations Development Programme, United Nations Fund for Population Activities and United Nations Office for Project Services, respectively).

In his statement, Ambassador Pedro Luis Pedroso Cuesta, Permanent Representative of Cuba to the United Nations, acknowledged the efforts made and results achieved by UNDP, including its Regional Bureau for Latin America and the Caribbean, in the socio-economic response to the COVID-19 pandemic.

He highlighted the actions taken by UNDP in Cuba, which have contributed to strengthening the response and control capacity to address the pandemic and to support recovery efforts.

Pedroso Cuesta reckoned that the UNDP Strategic Plan 2022-2025 must leverage support to the South-South and Triangular Cooperation through the exchange of experiences, best practices, technical assistance and capacity building, among other methods. He affirmed that these methods could be a valuable contribution in the search for solutions to common challenges and threats, such as those related to education, public health, disaster risk reduction, and so forth.

The Cuban representative called for strengthening and broadening the focus on groups of countries in special situations, including Small Island Developing States (SIDS), as well as countries facing specific needs and challenges, such as “middle-income” countries.
