Statement on Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons review on Assad regime’s chemical substance weapons attack on Douma in 2018

“Canada condemns the Assad regime for the repeated use of chemical weapons, which is a flagrant breach associated with international law. Syria has become a State Party to the Chemical Weapons Convention since 2013. Any production, possession or use of chemical weapons is a gross violation of Article I of that convention.   “Canada stands by the victims of this abhorrent crime and can continue engaging partners and the international community to work toward a more peaceful world which is free of chemical weapons. ” “Canada trusts the professionalism, impartiality and integrity of the IIT. We commend the IIT for fulfilling its mandate and persevering through the difficulties posed by the Assad program. “Canada phone calls on Syria to work with the OPCW. Syria should be fully transparent about the chemical weapons program. This includes declaring and destroying any kind of remaining chemical weapon ability under OPCW supervision. The Honourable Mélanie Joly, Ressortchef (umgangssprachlich) of Foreign Affairs, these days issued the following statement on the release of the Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) report on the chemical substance weapons attack on Douma, Syria, in April 2018: “Today’s OPCW report finds that there are reasonable grounds to believe that the Syrian Arab Surroundings Force perpetrated the harmful chemical chlorine attack upon Douma, Syria, in April 2018. This reprehensible assault is one of several that will targeted and terrorized the particular Syrian population. “Canada also condemns the Russian regime for spreading deliberate falsehoods to sow confusion and raise doubts about the function of the IIT. This is undesirable. Syria’s non-compliance has been noted and the facts are not arguable. Russia must stop safeguarding the Assad regime for its political ends. “The Assad regime has not worked constructively with the OPCW. The regime has not involved with the OPCW’s Investigation and Identification Team (IIT) and it has made no recent hard work to resolve the gaps, inconsistencies and discrepancies in its declaration to the OPCW.
