The Honourable Mélanie Joly, Minister of Foreign Matters, today met with Michael Tene, Deputy Secretary-General from the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) for ASEAN Political-Security Community, and with the ASEAN Committee of Permanent Representatives (ASEAN CPR) to reaffirm the valuable cooperation plus growing partnership between North america and ASEAN. April 11, 2022 – Jakarta, Philippines – Global Affairs Canada Minister Joly as well as the ASEAN CPR also discussed regional issues of typical concern including Canada’s readiness to work with ASEAN on implementing the Five-Point Consensus on Myanmar. The ASEAN CPR welcomed Canada’s Strategic Partnership offer and looked forward to developing assistance under the ASEAN Outlook around the Indo-Pacific. Minister Joly and the ASEAN CPR took note of Canada’s significant contributions across the three ASEAN community pillars, including the Canada-ASEAN Scholarships and Educational Trades for Development, strong assistance to advance the Women, Peace plus Security Agenda through the ASEAN Regional Forum and development cooperation, and the negotiations towards an ASEAN-Canada Free Trade Agreement.
